Meteor Crater

We all wanted to see Meteor Crater. Personally, I wanted to go there because I kind of remembered it from when I was 4 1/2 and my family traveled around the country in a Wonder Bread truck that had been converted into a camper (no kidding). I have just a few memories of this trip, and the crater is one of them.

So we drove an hour east of Flagstaff, then twenty miles down the road, paid our entrance fees and...it's a big hole in the ground where a meteor hit a long time ago and exploded. There's a bunch of sciency stuff and a cheesy movie and things, but that's pretty much it. Oh, and the astronauts trained there for the moon landing...there's a little astronaut standee at the bottom.

This is pretty much it. Now, don't get me wrong; it's cool to see, big and impressive, and the science and how they figured out what happened and when it happened is interesting, but this is pretty much all there is to it. We stayed about an hour, looked at everything, checked out the gift shop (which was pretty good) and left.
The side of the crater had some interesting rock layers. This shows what is actually in the crater. One (of hundreds, albeit a big one) piece of the meteorite A view from the parking lot over the landscape. Look! There's my wonderful truck, Boudika!
